Create Your Opening

July 17th, 2008

Step #3

You want your opening to grab the audience’s attention and prepare them for your message. A great way to grab people’s attention is to start your opening with a question. A question will get everyone thinking an involved.

Another possibility is to open with a quote that pertains to your topic or start off with something controversial. Any of these will capture the audience, get them involved and keep them with you during your presentation.

So the audience knows what to expect, your opening should introduce your topic, your position and the points that support your position. If you have already chosen your topic and developed your points, putting your opening together will be easy.

Determine Your Points

July 7th, 2008

Step #2

Once you have chosen your topic, the next thing to do is pick your points. For the average speech about three points will work just fine.

So, determine three ideas that you what to present about your topic and write each one down. Then take the time to research and explain each point. A very common way to explain a point is to tell a story. A story will help your audience connect to the point and remember the concept better.

Fear of Speaking

June 27th, 2008

People fear public speaking more than just about any thing else. But exactly why I am not sure. Could it be that we …

  • are afraid of making a mistake?
  • are worried what others will think?
  • lack confidence in our abilities?
  • think our message is weak?

For most of us, it is probably a little bit of everything. But these fears don’t have to prevent us from giving a great presentation. We can overcome each problem with a little work.
